About University of Tennessee at Martin

The University of Tennessee at Martin is a university in Martin, which is the largest city in Weakley County, in the US state of Tennessee, having a population estimated at a number of more than 10 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, being located 130 miles northeast of Memphis, and 150 miles northwest of Nashville. Martin was founded in 1873, being incorporated one year later, and it has been a pioneer in activities of higher education since the year 1900 when Hall Moody Institute, which became the University of Tennessee, the first advanced educational institution, was established.

As stated above, UT Martin's history began in 1900, when it first started as Hall-Moody Institute, a Baptist junior college, which, in 1927, under the auspices of the University of Tennessee, became the University of Tennessee Junior College, which operated as so, until 1951, when, the University of Tennessee Martin Branch was born. In 1967, the institution was designated as a primary campus of the UT system and was given its current name.

In addition to the main campus, in Martin, UT also has branch campuses in Knoxville and Chattanooga, UTM, as the university is more often referred to, being the only public four-year university in West Tennessee outside Memphis. Due to its rural location, the university's main focus has been on undergraduate studies in education and agriculture, today, UTM also offering educational programs in liberal arts, in the recent years, also presenting an increasing emphasis on business and engineering.

Athletics

UTM's atheltic teams are known as the UT Martin Skyhawks, who compete in the Ohio Valley Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, equestrian, football, golf, rodeo, and several other sports. "Captain" is the official name of UT Martin's costumed Skyhawk mascot, and their colors are orange and blue.

Notable Alumni

Among the most resonant names, on the list of UTM notable alumni, there are: Major General John "Glad" Castellaw - Chief of Staff, U.S. Central Command, William C. Rhodes - president and CEO of AutoZone, Inc., Van Jones - attorney and internationally-recognized civil and human rights advocate, Elizabeth Donald - journalist and horror novelist, and Dr. John Richard Barker - Executive Director of the Department of Research, Evaluation, and Assessment, Memphis City Schools.
